Does Earphone Type Affect Risk for Recreational Noise-induced Hearing Loss?
نویسنده
چکیده
Background Over the past year, considerable media attention has been given to the potential risk of hearing loss associated with the use of portable music players. A study of output levels of portable compact disc (CD) players (Fligor and Cox, 2004) suggested recommendations for safer listening level and duration for consumers. Fligor and Cox (2004) also reported in-ear earphones produced higher sound levels than over-the-ear headphones at the same volume control setting. Based on this finding it was recommended that volume control settings and listening durations should be adjusted accordingly. A report at this conference on output levels of mp3 players (Portnuff and Fligor) describes similar findings, updated for the current generation of technology.

Background and Objectives: Noise-induced hearing loss is a prevalent work-related morbidity in the country. We determined the strength of association between hearing loss and occupational noise exposure as the first step in prevention programs.Material and Methods: A historical cohort study involving 100 exposed and 31 non-exposed subjects was conducted. Noise exposure was estimated using sound...
متن کاملEffect of Exposure to a Mixture of Organic Solvents on Hearing Thresholds in Petrochemical Industry Workers
Introduction: Hearing loss is one of the most common occupational diseases. In most workplaces, workers are exposed to noise and solvents simultaneously, so the potential risk of hearing loss due to solvents may be attributed to noise. In this study we aimed to assess the effect of exposure to mixed aromatic solvents on hearing in the absence of exposure to hazardous noise. Materials and Met...
متن کاملRelationship between Sound Pressure Levels and the Risk of Hearing Loss using Personal Protective Equipment in Manufacturing Industries
Introduction: The sound pressure levels caused by work environment noise, along with the effects and ways of reducing it, are one of the most important issues in the manufacturing industry. Noise is the most common pollutant in the industrial environment, which can cause many disorders in various organs of the body, such as the auditory and vascular systems. This study aimed to investigate the ...
متن کاملHair Color and Hearing Loss: A Survey in a Group of Military Men
Introduction: It has been shown that low levels of pigmentation increase susceptibility to noise-induced hearing loss in humans. For this reason, white populations develop more pronounced noise- induced hearing loss in comparison to black populations. Similarly, blue-eyed individuals exhibit greater temporary threshold shift than brown-eyed subjects; still, no strong correlation has been veri...
